John Toshack unveiled as Macedonia boss

JOHN TOSHACK rolls back the years as he is pictured with the retro red with yellow stripes shirt he used to wear for Wales.

But current Welsh boss Gary Speed needn’t worry about a Tosh playing comeback, nor is he launching a bid to return to the manager’s job he left a year ago.

Toshack’s new colours are those of Macedonia, for whom he was officially unveiled as manager yesterday.

Toshack named his squad for the Euro 2012 qualifier with Russia on September 2.

But he is already looking further ahead... to locking horns with the very Welsh young guns he brought into Speed’s current set-up.

Macedonia and Wales have been drawn together in the next World Cup campaign, putting Toshack in direct conflict with the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Wayne Hennessey.

Toshack said: “It will be hard to play against my old Wales team, particularly after the effort we put into bringing through those youngsters.

“But I can’t worry about how Welsh fans will react because I am a professional.

“My job is to do my best to turn things around in Macedonia. It is a tough World Cup group, but it’s also balanced and we can aim to qualify.”

Toshack takes over a Macedonia side who are second bottom of Euro 2012 GroupŠB and will use the final matches to start planning for the 2014 World Cup campaign, where they will face Wales, Scotland, Belgium, Croatia and Serbia.

Macedonia FA President Harry Hadzi-Risteski said: “It is an honour to have someone of John Toshack’s stature in charge.

“That is why we are giving him a No.10 shirt, his old number, as a memory of this moment.”
