A majority of citizens in Macedonia are against the use of nuclear power as a way to produce electricity, shows a poll conducted by Brima Gallup International following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan and radioactive leaks from the Fukushima nuclear power plants.
71% of those interviewed are against nuclear energy, 19% support it, while 10% have no opinion on the matter. In comparison, nuclear energy as a way to produce electricity before the March earthquake in Japan and developments at the Fukushima plant has been supported by 21% and 67% of the citizens in Macedonia were against.
98% of the respondents taking part in the poll have heard about the earthquake in Japan and 89% know about the radiation leaks at the Fukushima nuclear plant.
67% of the respondents believe that Japan will recover soon becoming even stronger economically than it was prior to the catastrophe.
The Brima Gallup survey shows that out of those interviewed in 47 countries worldwide there are more supporters than opponents of nuclear energy - 49% in favour compared to 43% against, even though general support declines after the earthquake in Japan.
500 respondents were interviewed in Macedonia between March 24 and 31.
