With the launch of bankruptcy procedure against A1 television station, around 30 workers will be left jobless. The National Broadcast Council is set to deliver a decision on Wednesday, whether it will revoke A1’s license to broadcast. It is expected for this event to be highly politicized as the head of the NB Council is also a high ranking member of the opposition which has strong ties to the station.  On Tuesday, state-appointed trustee Aco Petrov said that A1 television station is insolvent and it meets the terms for launch of bankruptcy procedures. Petrov told the court that the enterprise does not show solvency, i.e. it can not repay its debt. Furthermore, its bank account has been frozen since June 2 (45 days). Petrov's audit included all statements for 2010, while A1's accounting team submitted statements untill 2009. Broadcasting company A1 has a debt of some EUR 30 million. Out of that, the insolvent company owes about EUR 9.5 million to the Macedonia Public Revenue Office. Therefore, it has been demanded for the company to declare bankruptcy, said temporary bankruptcy manager Aco Petrov at the hearing at the Basic Court in Skopje.  According to Petrov, there is only EUR 90,000 on A1’s accounts, which is not sufficient for the settlement of a MKD 1.8 billion debt. The company owes a lot to companies affiliated with the TV, but Petrov doubts that the debt will ever be repaid. Since the company’s insolvency is obvious, bankruptcy has been demanded, Petrov says.

The National Statistical Office's (NSO) 2011 Census that was released this past week by the Bulgarian Government came up with only 1,654 Bulgarian citizens - out of the total of over 7.3 million citizens in the country which declared Macedonian descent, suggesting quite ridiculously that the Macedonian population has somehow decreased three times in size since 2001, or more than 100 times in size since the 1958 census when 187,789 Bulgarian citizens declared themselves to be of Macedonian descent.  Such unfathomable statistics could only result from manipulation of data and intimidation of Census participants (and workers) by the Bulgarian government. If Kosovo's census workers added 150,000 to its population by making up nonexisting neighborhoods and buildings (they were paid by the count), the Bulgarian census workers had the privilege to fill out the census forms without visiting or talking to people, because they simply "know" their people and their ethnicities! ...

The grand opening of Skopje's new world class passenger terminal, part of Alexander The Great Airport is slated for September 8, Macedonian Independence Day. At a cost of €110 million the new terminal will be ten times bigger than the existing building and will allow for long-awaited improvements to passenger travel. The terminal will feature six air bridges, 23 check-in desks and 15 passport control counters, stretching over more than 40,000 square metres. TAV says that they have completed more than 80 per cent of the construction of the building. Work has also been done on the runway, which is being extended from 2.5 to 3.1 kilometres to ease the landing of larger aircraft. A new cargo terminal and road access to the airport and parking area are also being constructed. “My vision for the airport is to make it the regional hub,” TAV Macedonia's director, Murat Ornekol, told News 24 TV recently. After a fierce debate in Parliament, where the opposition led by SDSM accused the ruling Government of not protecting Macedonia's national interests, DUI from the podium in parliament said things that Macedonians suspected all along. Some would say this is a sad day, but in reality, it's a good day when an ethnic Albanian party defends Macedonia's national interests from an internal culprit, in this case an ethnic Macedonian party. The SDSM accused the ruling government of selling out Macedonia's national interest by allowing minorities in small villages who are over 50% of the population to fly their own flag which with the new law is three times smaller than the Macedonian flag. It also allows politicians to speak their own language if they receive a question from a member of their ethnic community. "I started driving tractors and other large vehicles from early age at my father's farm. I then became a driving instructor for B and C class. When i first received my B class license, it wasn't enough, so went for C, and later for D, the one that allows you to drive a bus. To put it simply, driving a bus was always my ultimate profession" says Vesna Najdovska who just recently received a silver medal in a European competition for 'bus driving skills' held in Bulgaria. Althought Vesna did not receive the gold, she was the only woman in the competition, beating 120 male bus drivers from 30 European capitals. Vesna has been employed by Skopje's public transit authority JSP for 6 years. JSP's previous director Krste Veljanovski refused to hire Vesna fearing she wouldn't make it in the profession. With 63 votes ‘for’ and 40 votes ‘against’, Macedonian parliament adopted the amendments to the flags law.  The proposed changes to the existing law envisage that local governments in municipalities where more than 50 percent of local population are members of different ethnic community can fly their own flag alongside the Macedonian state flag. The size of the state flag must be threefold larger.  The law was put to vote last Friday but Parliament President Trajko Veljanoski had to reschedule the session due to lack of quorum. Macedonian parliament is also set to discuss the amendments to the law on National Broadcasting Council at today’s session. Sources within the Macedonian FA claim Klaus Augenthaler is a top candidate to take over the coaching position at the Macedonian national team, which became available after Mirsad Jonuz was fired two weeks ago. Gjoko Hadzievski, Gjore Jovanovski who were considered to be the main candidates for the job refused to take over a sinking ship! Instead, Hadzievski went to coach a club in Saudi Arabia, while Jovanovski simply refused to coach the 'primadonas' that is the Macedonian national team.  Apart from Augenthaler, candidates are also Croatian legend Miroslav Ciro Blazevic, Chede Janevski, Zoran Stratev and others from Turkey and Bulgaria. Handball: Mak Ladies Beat Croatia, Serbia Macedonian ladies have started the 7th European Championship in Beach volleyball with a bang, defeating Serbia and Croatia in its first two matches. The win over Croatia went beyond expectations as Croatia is the reigning world vice champ. Against both Serbia and Croatia, the Macedonian team was able to record 2-1 wins out of the three played. Only three of the red and yellow ladies have played on the beach, says Todorovska. The ladies are scheduled to play next against Italy and Spain, while Macedonia's mens team will play against Denmark and Ukraine. 

Roberto Nelson is entering his sophomore season as a guard for Oregon State. Though he’s only 6’3″ and 188 pounds according to his bio, he can dunk with some force. On a recent service trip to Macedonia for Beavers without Borders, Nelson dunked during a pick-up game, shattered the backboard, and got bloodied by the broken glass. Check out the amazing video via College Basketball Nation and beware, it gets pretty nasty: Nelson needed 20 stitches to get fixed up, but it looks like he was OK. What’s surprising is that more players don’t get injured when they break the backboard. Think about it — it’s broken glass shattering on them. Seriously though, not a bad performance by a 6’3″ guy considering the last time we posted on someone shattering a backboard it was a 7-foot center.

Another Mat ceases operations EX-YU aviation news can reveal that Mat Airways, Macedonia’s largest airline, has suspended all services until further notice. Although it started operations only a year ago it seems the airline could have the same fate as its predecessor MAT Macedonian Airlines. Mat Airways is owned by Serbia’s largest tour operator – Kon Tiki Travel. However, the Belgrade based company has been experiencing financial difficulty of its own and wants to concentrate on its core business in Serbia rather than finance an airline in Macedonia. Mat Airways’ Boeing 737-500 operated its last service on June 20 and has been grounded ever since. Macedonia’s other charter airline, Skywings International, which tied up with Mat due to both financial problems and problems with the Macedonian Civil Aviation Agency has managed to restart its own flights, offering services from Sarajevo to Dusseldorf with its Boeing 737-300. Das US-Unternehmen Kemet Electronics feierte gestern den Baubeginn seiner neuen Produktionsanlage im Industriepark TIDZ bei Skopje. Auf dem 4,4 ha großen Grundstück soll eine Produktionshalle mit 10.000 m² Fläche entstehen und ca. 500 neue Arbeitsplätze schaffen. Die gesamte Investition beläuft sich auf ca. 25 Mio. Euro. Der Produktionsstart ist für 2012 geplant. In der neuen Fabrik sollen zunächst Kondensatoren hergestellt werden, in einem weiteren Schritt folgen weitere Produkte. Die Grundsteinlegung erfolgte bei Olof Per Loof, CEO von Kemet Electronics, gemeinsam mit dem mazedonischen Ministerpräsidenten Nikola Gruevski.
