The idea of a cargo airport in Stip has not been abandoned, but whether it will be built or not depends on the results of the site-inspection conducted by the Macedonian Meteorology Service, Dnevnik daily reports. The cargo airport is to be built by the Turkish company TAV, which, by signing the concession agreement for the two airports in Skopje and Ohrid, obliged itself to construct a cargo airport. Under the agreement, the cargo airport should be completed by 2020. The TAV Holding CEO, Sani Sener, says the company is ready to start construction immediately after they receive the inspection results on air currents and wind directions. During an emergency session of the Macedonian Government, it was decided to send immediate help to Serbia and Bosnia.   To this end, official Skopje is sending a Mi 17 helicopter to transport people to safety, 75 water rescue experts from the Agency for Protection and Rescue as well as technical support personnel from the Ministry of Interior and Defense. The Macedonian Government is also sending 45 water extraction pumps, 10,000 sand bags, 35 generators, 9 rescue boats, 3000 blankets, medical supplies etc, reported MIA.   The help is already in Serbia and Bosnia, it was sent as soon as official word came from Saraevo and Belgrade that assistance was needed. Russia, Israel, Slovenia are also providing assistance with more European countries joining in.   Update: Earlier today Macedonia sent a helicopter Mi17 with crew to assist with rescuing operations. Mineral water company "Pelisterka" joined the action and sent 225,000 liters of water.

In the first four months of 2014, the value of export from the free economic zones is EUR 350 million. Export value in the first quarter, standing at EUR 250 million registers a 95% rise compared to the same period last year. If this tempo is maintained the Directorate for Technological and Industrial Development Zones expects the planned figure of EUR 1.2 million export to be exceeded this year. Total export value from Macedonia in the first three months rose by 17%. "There has been a huge increase in export compared to last year. Only within a month, the value of exported goods from the zones is approximately EUR 100 billion and we are on the right path to achieve or even surpass the overall planned export from the zones of EUR 1.2 billion annually, the Head of TIDZ Directorate, Viktor Mizo, stated. Macedonia this year exported 80 percent more compared with last year, and only in April exports  increased to around € 100 million, says Directorate for Technological Industrial Development Zones CEO, Viktor Mizo. According to data from the State Statistical Office, in the first three months of this year exports increased by 17 percent and imports by 13 percent. The increase in exports, according to Mizo, is mostly due to foreign investments, which not only helped in the revival of the economy and reducing unemployment, but changed the structure of exports. - In the first 4 months of the year, total exports from the zones reached figure of about € 350 million, and it is mostly due to the second phase of Johnson Matthey, Johnson Controls in Stip, Van Hool, but also Kemet Electronics, said Mizo in a statement to Kurir. Greece’s rail operator, TRAINOSE, will resume daily services between Thessaloniki, Skopje, Belgrade and Sofia from May 10.  TRAINOSE, the operating arm of the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE), had suspended services linking Thessaloniki to the Balkan capitals in February 2011 due to financial difficulties. However,  as its economic situation is improving, it decided to to strengthen Thessaloniki’s position in the rail map by relaunching international services. To celebrate launching the restored service, TRAINOSE is offering a 30% discount from May 10 to June 10. A single fare from Thessaloniki to Skopje will cost 12.20 euros, or 17.10 euros for a return ticket (19.50 euros after June 10), while Thessaloniki to Belgrade will cost 33.80 euros, or 47.30 euros for a return ticket (54.10 euros after June 10). Qatar's Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani yesterday issued Decree No. 17 of 2014 ratifying a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the legal field between the State of Qatar’s Ministry of Justice and the Republic of Sudan’s Ministry of Justice, which was signed in Khartoum on May 30, 2013. It will come into force of law in line with Article 68 of the Constitution. The Emir issued Decree No. 18 of 2014 ratifying an agreement on the regulation of employing the Macedonian workers in Qatar between the governments of Qatar and the Republic of Macedonia, which was signed in Skopje on October 17, 2011, and to come into force of law in line with Article 68 of the Constitution. The Emir also issued Decree No. 19 of 2014 ratifying an agreement on the activities of diplomatic cooperation between the governments of Qatar and the French Republic, which was signed on June 23, 2013, and to have the power of law as per Article 68 of the Constitution.

Die Polizei hat am vergangenen Freitag im Transitbereich des Flughafens Zürich einen Drogenkurier verhaftet. Er hatte zuvor mit Kokain gefüllte Fingerlinge geschluckt. Insgesamt wurden 0,4 Kilo Kokain beschlagnahmt, wie die Kantonspolizei Zürich mitteilte. Der am Freitag Verhaftete, ein 21-jähriger Mazedonier, war von Punta Cana nach Zürich eingereist. Er wollte im Anschluss weiter nach Podgorica. Der junge Mann hatte rund 400 Gramm Kokain geschluckt. Der Drogenkurier muss sich vor der Staatsanwaltschaft Winterthur/Unterland verantworten.

In the first three months of this year, the export of goods from Macedonia was 1.112.587.000, while the import was 1.696.617.000. Compared to the first quarter last year, the export shows a 17% increase, while the import shows a 13% rise. The State Statistical Office released results indicating that the import-export coverage is 65.6%, while the trade deficit is 4.031.000. Macedonia exports the most precious metal catalysts or their alloys, such as ferro-silicate, ferronickel, iron or steel products and clothes. It mostly imports raw or powdered platinum and platinum alloys, electricity and other platinum group metals and their alloys, raw or in the form of powder. Out of the exported goods, 80.1% have ended up in the EU, and 12.4% in the countries of the Western Balkans. Most, i.e. 63.2% of the total import comes from the EU member-states. Macedonia's export to Kosovo is decreasing rapidly. The falling trend in the trade between both countries continues this year as well, after last year's registered decrease of 48.9% in export of goods. In 2012, the decline rate was 27.5%, daily Dnevnik reports.  In the past few years, Kosovo's market was one of the most appealing markets for placement of Macedonian products, following the German.     The last statistics showed that Kosovo is the second biggest export market for Macedonia, where, since the beginning of 2014, about USD 392 million worth goods were placed. Yet, the latest business chambers' data showed that the Macedonian export mounted to USD 115.9 million. The Republic of Macedonia has noted the third highest growth of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Europe and, according to this year's projections, it is expected to be fourth on European level, the European Commission says in today's Spring economic forecast. Macedonia's GDP has grown for 3.1%, which is slightly lower than Romania (3.5%) and Lithuania (3.3.%), while the EU has noted GDP growth of only 0.1%, the EU area was in recession (-0.4%), the US has a surplus of 1.9% and Japan 1.5%, MIA reports from Brussels. This year forecasts predicted Macedonia's GDP to mark an increase of 3.0%, Latvia of 3.8%, Lithuania of 3.3% and Poland of 3.2%. Real GDP growth is expected to advance with moderation in 2014, at 1.6% and 1.2% respectively in the eurozone, before gaining some further speed in 2015. The new President-elect, Gjorge Ivanov, by May 27 at latest, shall hand over the mandate to the Prime Minister, Nikola Gruevski, to form a government, after VMRO-DPMNE's victory at the last week's elections. It will most probably be the first task of the President in his second term of office, Utrinski Vesnik daily reports. PM Gruevski will assign ministers for the new Government of the Republic of Macedonia that will consist mostly of ministers from VMRO-DPMNE. That is the only thing that is clear for the time being. Macedonia's Government has passed a decision to lower the value added tax (VAT) for baby products, school equipment, fodder and additives for use in cattle food and livestock. Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski announced at a press conference Wednesday that the Government has approved the draft bill amending the Law on VAT, envisaging reduction in the tax rate of these products from 18 to 5%. "The new law is expected to enter into force after the establishment of the new parliament structure and following its adoption in the Assembly, which is set to take place at the end of May or during the month of June. The fiscal implication that it will cause will be MKD 380 million annually, or half of it for this year, because there are six more months until the end of the year," Gruevski said. Former Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Richard G. Lugar today called for NATO countries to offer membership to the Republic of Macedonia.
